Up America's Cup Leadin

The 33nd America's Cup

The 33rd America's Cup Race will the second consecutive America's Cup Race MAY be held in the Mediterranean sea of off the Spanish Port City of Valencia. This represents just the second time the races have been held in Europe in over 150-years.

Additionally, for the 2009 race there will be a new Race Protocol which proved to be contentious at the outset, but was finally agreed upon by the major parties in October of 2007.  This series of races will be made even more interesting because the specification of the racing yachts have been changed dramatically with the yachts being constructed under the new AC90 Rule.  The yachts are much bigger and very much more powerful, requiring more crew members and more skill to get the maximum out of them.

Building and racing these big yachts make this an extremely expensive sport, but one that provides an incredible spectacle and an extraordinary test of seamanship on the part of the crew members.

A further major difference to previous America's Cup events is the competition format. The 33rd edition will be divided into four phases: Acts, Trials, Challenger Selection Series and the America's Cup Match, with the Defender being able to compete in the Acts, the Trials and the Match, but not in the Challenger Selection Series. The climax will be the Challenger Races culmination with the America's Cup Match itself in 2009.
