Pentair Inc., maker of sump
pumps and pool equipment, said Friday a jury ruled its subsidiary Essef
Corp. must pay Celebrity Cruise Lines Inc. $15.2 million as part of a
case involving an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease on a cruise ship in
1994.
Essef was sued by Celebrity Cruise lines, a unit of Royal Caribbean
Cruises (nyse: RCL - news - people ) Ltd., which claimed several
passengers on the Horizon cruise ship got the disease because of a
defective water filter in a whirlpool spa that failed to stop the spread
of bacteria.
A jury awarded Celebrity Cruises $183 million, but in January, a judge
tossed out all but $10.4 million of that. The judge ordered a new trial
on the jury's finding that Celebrity should receive $47.6 million in
lost profits.
On Friday, Pentair (nyse: PNR - news - people ) said the jury in that
new trial awarded $15.2 million to Celebrity Cruises for lost profits in
1994 and 1995.
Pentair said it is studying the verdict and determining any future
action, which could include post-trial motions.
Shares of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. fell 46 cents to $42.73 in
premarket trading after closing at $43.19 on Thursday. |
