Burgundy & Franche-Comté
The history of the
Burgogne
and the Franche Comté (“Free County”) is
steeped
in
history, dating back to the Roman days
the region has been agriculturally rich
and strategically important and has long
been a political prize. Spain
ruled the Franche Comté for more than a
century, and the courts of the powerful
Dukes of Burgundy rivaled those of
France’s kings.
The region is known for
its beautiful rolling hills and charming
medieval villages housing exquisite
examples of romanes and Italian
renaissance architecture. The unspoiled
countryside harbors lush farmlands which
produce delicacies such as foie gras,
Gruyere and, of course, world-famous
wines as well as the famous Dijon mustard
introduced to the region by the Romans
Not to be missed are the
open-air markets of medieval towns like
Dijon, Sens and Dole, or you can cycle
through fields of wildflower
alongside the prettiest canal in France
- the canal Nivernais.
Canal and river cruising
is one of the most relaxing and intimate
ways to experience the beauty of Europe,
without crowds and in great comfort. For
those who appreciate fine food and
wines, peaceful vistas and an exciting
new destination each day without ever
leaving “home,” this has become a
favorite way to celebrate a special
birthday, anniversary or time together
as a family. |
